During the season of Lent, the Church invites us to undertake three works of (1) prayer; (2) fasting and self-denial; and (3) almsgiving and charity. What we do is personal choice, as an offering to the Lord, but sometimes people struggle to think what might be best. Bishop Philip suggests:
1. Works of (daily) prayer: attending Mass; say the Rosary or Stations of the Cross; reading the Gospel of the day or daily meditation.
2. Works of fasting: give up, chocolate, biscuits, fasting on Fridays or by cutting back on TV.
3. Works of charity: assisting a parish charitable activity; visiting someone who is sick or elderly; volunteering when an appeal is made; saving money from fasting and donating it to a good charitable cause and supporting charities such as CAFOD.
