Forty days after Jesus was born he was presented in the temple. As the first born he belonged to God. According to the Law, Mary and Joseph were required to take him to the temple and ‘redeem’ him by paying five shekels. Our Gospel today tells us that two very old people, Simeon and Anna, were delighted as they recognised Jesus as the long awaited Messiah. We hear the prayer spoken by Simeon as he holds the infant Jesus in his arms. In Night Prayer we use Simeon’s prayer as we close the day called the Nunc Dimittis. Like Simeon we to are called to share our
faith in Jesus and to be the light of Christ to the world.
