Today we celebrate the canonisation of John Henry Newman by Pope Francis in Rome, along with the canonisation of four women from India, Brazil & Europe. Thousands of Catholics from the UK have travelled to Rome for the event, the first English Saint in modern times. The Prince of Wales, Ambassador to the Holy See, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Bishop Philip Egan, Bishops, priests & many from the English Oratories in Oxford, Manchester, London & Birmingham are all to attend. The church of Blessed Dominic Barberi at Newman’s former community in Littlemore, Oxford have planned special celebrations. See their website:
www.newmancononisation.com. Today we too remember this historic event to honour this great scholar, humble and holy man. We remember that on 9th October 1945 Dominic Barberi received Newman into the Catholic Church.
O God our heavenly Father, we offer You heartfelt thanks for the life and holiness of John Henry Newman. In him You give us an inspiring example of priest and teacher, heroic and humble in his labour for the salvation of souls and the pursuit of holiness. Through his intercession we ask You to lead us by the kindly light of the Holy Spirit, and so grant us peace and joy, in the one fold of the
Redeemer. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Today we will sing Newman’s hymns:
‘Praise to the Holiest in the Height’ and ‘Lead Kindly Light’.
