Today, we listen to a very dramatic Gospel story about the woman who committed adultery. Jesus defuses a tense situation by forgiving the woman who sinned. He then turned the tables on her accusers – ‘if there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to throw a stone at her’. It is a challenge to all of us to look inward before we ‘cast stones’ to judge others.
The story ends with a very powerful statement by Jesus to the woman herself, she is alone with Jesus, all have drifted away: ‘Neither do I condemn you. Go away, and don’t sin anymore’. Jesus does not condemn or criticise the woman, instead he treats her with respect and encourages her to go forward with a new way of living.
