We all want to be somebody. We desire greatness, yet few of us would admit this. Our approach is more subtle as we place ourselves above others. We criticise, gossip, nag, judge, use inappropriate language, and get angry—all of which to suggest we are important. In any community, like a parish, people seek status and positions of power. We would hate to admit that this might happen in our parish community.
Jesus teaches that greatness is about service. It means putting the other first. It is to love, when there may be nothing in return. It is to be generous, when there is no benefit. It is to be forgiving, when the easier choice is to give as good as we get.
• In what ways have I been called to serve rather than to laud it over others ?
• How can I change from being self-centre to be other-centred ?
