Today we hear of the wealthy young man who rushes up to Jesus wanting to know “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” We hear that Jesus looks at the man lovingly. Then Jesus challenges him to give up everything and “to enter the Kingdom of God”. We hear “his face fell, he went away sad”. We readily identify with the man’s desire for eternal life. However, we too find it difficult to give up our possessions. There is a yearning in all of us for nice things, we want the larger TV, the latest mobile, the lovely clothes and the nice house. Possessions can so quickly possess us and run our lives. In order to follow Jesus faithfully we need to minimise those possessions that distract us and give our time and energy to doing good, to developing our relationship with others and most of all with the person of Jesus Christ.
